Russia’s United Nations envoy Vitaly Churkin, one of the country’s best-known diplomats, has died in New York, the foreign ministry says. The ministry gave no details on the circumstances of his death but offered condolences to his relatives and said the diplomat had died one day before his 65th birthday.

Churkin served as “diplomat” for the Soviet Union and post-Soviet Russia.

He represented post-Soviet Russia at the United Nations from April 8th, 2006. Churkin blamed Ukraine for the shot down of the Malaysian airlines MH17 flight, which was in fact conducted from territory controlled by the pro-Russian rebels. In defense of pro-Putin Ukraine’s President Yanukovych Russia envoy tried to confuse Western audience with audacious statement of untruth that called the Maidan Revolution of Dignity “a war against Ukrainian people”.

From 1979 to 1982 he was a secretary at the Embassy of Soviet Union in USA. From 1974 to 1979 he was an interpreter at the Soviet Embassy in Geneva.
