North Korea fired a ballistic missile on Sunday, the US Strategic Command said. It detected and tracked what it assessed to be a medium- or intermediate-range ballistic missile.

The missile was fired from around Banghyon, North Pyongyan Province. The same area where the North Koran regime launched its powerful midrange Musudan missile on October 15th and 20th, 2016.

The US Strategic Command Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said that after it flew about 500 kilometres the missile splashed into the sea between the South Korean Peninsula and Japan. It did not hit Japanese territorial seas, he stated.

The report came as President of the United States Donald Trump was hosting Japanese President Shinzo Abe. Both leaders condemned the North Korea’s missile test. “Absolutely intolerable”, Abe said. “I just want everybody to understand and fully know that the United States of America stands behind Japan, its great ally, 100 percent”, President Trump commented.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg condemned the North Korea’s missile test. “These consistent provocations and violations of binding UN Security Council Resolutions undermine regional and international security”, Stoltenberg said in the statement. “The DPRK must refrain from further provocations, halt all launches using ballistic missile technology and abandon once and for all its ballistic missile programmes in a complete, verifiable and irreversible manner, as required by the UN Security Council”, he reminded.

Phenian conducted two nuclear tests and several rocket launches in 2016. The head of the regime Kim Jong Un said in his New Year’s address that the country had reached the final stages of readiness to test ICBM, which would be a major step forward in its efforts to build a credible nuclear threat to the United States.

Analysts are still speculating what type of North Korean missile can pose a threat to the United States. The missile could be a Musudan, Kim Dong-yeop, an analysts at the Institute for Eastern Studies in Seoul, stated.
