In a moving open letter a mother of the Vietnamese blogger Nguyen Thi Tuyet Lan appealed to international community for help to demand justice for her daughter, a civic journalist and human rights defender that was officially arrested by the Communist regime over three weeks ago being detained in July.
Thanks to her and her friends publications the Western world learned about the scope and depth of tragedy of the Vietnamese fishermen and tourist workers in four provinces after the nomenklatura-controlled Formosa Plastics Group steel plant chemical spill in April killed tons of marine life.
“My daughter, blogger Mother Mushroom, Nguyen Ngoc Nhu Quynh, would have been deemed innocent if it were in a free nation.”
“For her advocacy for human rights, environmental protection and helping others who were imprisoned wrongly, she was arrested, leaving behind two children aged four and 10, who miss their mother every day,” Ms Nguyen Thi Tuyet Lan wrote.
She explained that since the police came to their house to arrest Quynh, her family has lived in fear. She said that her daughter’s arrest, her family has received “sympathy and attention from friends inside and outside of Vietnam”. Some international human rights groups and media have raised her daughter’s case. But this does not seem to be a sufficient amount of pressure for the Communist regime that keeps a mother of two young children behind bars. “It’s been three months since her arrest and we have not received any news about my daughter”, Ms Nguyen Thi Tuyet Lan informed.
“As the mother of a daughter who was arrested for her fight against injustice and protection of sovereignty, democracy and the environment, I really need more support from you who can raise your voices demanding freedom and justice for Quynh”, she stated. “Please raise your voices together with us to demand justice for Mother Mushroom”, she added.
On October 10th 2016, blogger and human rights defender Ms Nguyen Ngoc Nhu Quynh was arrested by authorities in Khanh Hoa province. She was charged under Article 88 of the Penal Code with ‘conducting anti-state propaganda’ and is being held in a detention centre in Nha Trang city.
The Communist government has been constantly repressing a courageous blogger and Coordinator of the Vietnamese Bloggers Network. The Network is one of the few independent writers’ associations in a country where the news media and publishing industry are tightly controlled by the governing Communist Party, She has repeatedly been targeted, including being arrested and physically attacked.
Since 2006, she has been blogging under the pseudonym of Me Nam (Mother Mushroom). She is known for her criticism of the government, including revealing corruption cases and human rights violations committed by the authorities. As a result, In 2014, she received a Human Rights Defender award from the Stockholm-based NGO Civil Rights Defenders.
